Chanderi

A sheer, glassy cotton-silk. Holds its shape without weight and catches light along the fold.

Description

Chanderi cut as a short boxy top and a bias-cut skirt that falls without a single gather. Lined in mul. The bias means it will hang slightly differently on every body, which is the intention.

Fabric & care

Chanderi is woven from unbleached, ungummed yarn, which is where its transparency comes from — the raw silk warp is never degummed, so the fabric keeps a glassy sheen instead of a matte finish. It is a difficult cloth to sew and an easy one to wear: almost weightless, but structured enough to hold a pleat. The town has been weaving it since the thirteenth century, and the GI registration now protects roughly four thousand looms.

Dry clean only. Store folded with the fold line shifted every few months so it does not set.
