The cloth

Kota Doria

Square checks called khats, woven from alternating cotton and silk. Feather-light and structured.

Description

Kota doria dyed with myrobalan — the same tannin used to prepare cloth for indigo, here left as the final colour. A soft acidic yellow that photographs greener than it is. The khat grid is visible against the light.

Sheer. We recommend a matching petticoat rather than a contrasting one.

Fabric & care

Kota doria is built from a grid — alternating cotton and silk threads in both directions create tiny square windows the weavers call khats. Traditionally the yarn is dressed with onion juice and rice paste before weaving, which stiffens it just enough to hold the grid open. The result weighs almost nothing and is transparent enough to need lining, but it holds a hem crisply. Kaithoon, outside Kota, is where nearly all of it is still made, mostly by women weaving at home.

Hand wash cold, no wringing. The khat structure relaxes if twisted. Dry flat in shade.
