Tussar Silk

Wild silk with a gold cast and a dry, textured hand. Heavier than mulberry, and far less shiny.

Description

Five and a half metres of undyed tussar with a woven zari border, kept deliberately narrow at three-quarters of an inch. The gold cast is the silk's own, not a finish. Comes with an unstitched blouse piece in the same cloth.

Heavy enough to hold a pleat without starch. Do not have it pre-pleated by a tailor.

Fabric & care

Tussar comes from silkworms that feed on arjun and sal in open forest rather than on cultivated mulberry. The cocoons are larger and coarser, and the reeled thread carries a natural gold cast that no dye fully covers — which is why madder over tussar reads warmer than madder over cotton. It has a dry, slightly papery hand and a matte lustre. We use it for the pieces meant to be worn at night.

Dry clean only. Keep away from direct sunlight, which will fade the gold cast unevenly.
