The cloth

Tussar Silk

Wild silk with a gold cast and a dry, textured hand. Heavier than mulberry, and far less shiny.

Description

Tussar taken to a deep iron grey, with an unlined pallu left plain across its full width. The heaviest cloth on the site at just under six hundred grams. It will outlive everything else you own.

The weight wants a firm petticoat. A soft one will let the pleats collapse.

Fabric & care

Tussar comes from silkworms that feed on arjun and sal in open forest rather than on cultivated mulberry. The cocoons are larger and coarser, and the reeled thread carries a natural gold cast that no dye fully covers — which is why madder over tussar reads warmer than madder over cotton. It has a dry, slightly papery hand and a matte lustre. We use it for the pieces meant to be worn at night.

Dry clean only. Keep away from direct sunlight, which will fade the gold cast unevenly.
